2:15 p.m. - What is short track speed skating and how does the 500m event work

Short track speed skating takes place on a smaller oval, measuring 111 metres in length, meaning that the turns take up most of the track. Meanwhile a long track oval is 400 metres in length, meaning the turns have a significant amount of space between them.

The events for short track are the 500 meter, 1000 meter, 1500 meter, and the relay races which are 5000 metres for men and 3000 metres for women.

In terms of equipment, that would include a helmet, cut proof suit and gloves as well as a neck guard, shin guards and knee pads due to the increased risk of injury.
