The beats of DJ Stryfe, the smell of popping corn, free juice, candy, chocolate, and the chance to take a break and paint a rock helped students kick back and relax between classes at North campus ' E Concourse.
The Spiritual Wellness Centre and First Year Experience partnered with Humber Esports to bring Rock N’ Art to Humber's North Campus on Oct 1.
DJ Stryfe, whose other name is Calvin Bissoon, said while his father was a DJ, he didn’t intend to follow in his footsteps until 2008, when Stryfe needed to make a mix for his breakdance group for a school talent show.
He said he liked mixing the music more than dancing.
By the end of high school, in 2014, Stryfe said he was DJing professionally with a friend. He said he had the turntables, and his friend had the mixer. Stryfe said they worked gigs DJing for all kinds of audiences.
His favourite mix is “Euro 2022,” which he said is a happy 80s driving mix.
Stryfe often DJs Humber events and used to work in Humber’s IT department.
Sadiya Chowdhury, Student Life Coordinator for First Year Experience, encouraged students over the speakers to scan a QR code upon entry. She said the QR code is to track attendance and gauge interest in running Rock N’ Art again.
Tables laid with rocks and art supplies filled with students across programs.
Beside the DJ booth, Sunny Singh, Humber Esports Event Coordinator, connected with students at a booth with a Humber Esports jersey, stickers, and a TV, connected to a Nintendo Switch, where they could play video games.
Singh said DJ Stryfe has been supporting Humber events for over a year and is “very community focused,” hosting intro-to-DJ workshops alongside other community engagement.
Stryfe said he expects to be back at Humber soon.
